Mackworth Island Park, ME Galleries

ME-MIP1 North : Located at one end of a causeway, and straddling the border between Portland and Falmouth, Maine, Mackworth Island is located in Casco Bay facing the coastal islands on the east and south and the mainland of Maine on the north and west. Present day Mackworth Island is home to the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf. On April 16-17, 2007, the Patriots’ Day Storm transformed the heavily forested island with high winds of 60 mph producing very large waves on top of high tides. Approximately 25-30% of the trees and vegetation were damaged severely enough for the Maine Department of Forestry to clear several areas, and to plan for reforestation of Mackworth Island. The Picture Post is set up for observations of the largest clear cut on the island on the northwest side of the island.

These photos were taken looking north from the post.
